Not Just a Test.
A Real Education.

Most schools teach the minimum to pass. We teach the skills that prevent accidents for life — using the same continuous improvement and root cause analysis principles used in aerospace.

01

Aerospace-Grade Safety Culture

Continuous improvement, root cause analysis of near-misses, and rigorous instructor training — the same culture that keeps rockets safe.

02

European Training Standards

Our founder earned his license in West Germany, where obtaining a license is genuinely challenging. We bring that rigor to California.

03

Modern Electric & Hybrid Fleet

Lessons in a Tesla Model 3 and 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid. Students take training more seriously in premium, modern vehicles.

04

Structured, Progressive Curriculum

Every lesson builds on the last — from basic vehicle control to defensive driving on the freeway. No repetition, no wasted time.

The Hills Driving School Honda CR-V — Los Angeles Driving Instructor

"My mission is to reduce car accidents by raising the standard of driver training. I spent 16 years in aerospace applying fail-proof safety principles — now I apply them to driving education."

Kamran Ford — Founder, The Hills Driving School LLC

The Numbers
You Must Know

Click any number to see the full rule. Created by Kamran Ford — our proprietary guide to make memorizing California DMV numbers easier.

1
Point per ticket or accident
Point System
1 point on your record results in a DMV warning letter to you and your parents. Insurance rates may increase.
3
Seconds following distance (we recommend 4+)
Following Distance
3 points = 6-month suspension + 6 months probation. Also: maintain 3 seconds behind the car ahead (4+ recommended by The Hills).
5
Seconds to signal before lane change
Signaling
Signal at least 5 seconds before a lane change. Also: 5 days to report a vehicle sale. 5 MPH in parking lots.
10
Days to report accident to DMV
Reporting
Report to DMV within 10 days if $750+ damage or injury. Allow 10 seconds for safe passing. Slow 5–10 MPH in rain.
15
MPH at blind intersections, alleys, railroad crossings
Speed Limit
15 MPH at blind intersections (can't see 100 ft), blind railroad crossings (can't see 400 ft), and in alleys.
18
Inches max from curb when parking
Parking
Park no more than 18 inches from the curb. This is also tested during the road test.
25
MPH in residential, school, business areas
Speed Limit
25 MPH in residential, business, or school districts unless posted otherwise. This is the maximum — always drive for conditions.
100
Feet to signal before a turn
Signaling
Signal at least 100 feet before a turn — roughly half a block in a residential area.
200
Feet to merge into bike lane before right turn
Bike Lane
Merge no more than 200 feet from the intersection before making a right turn across a bike lane.
300
Feet — switch to low beams behind a car
High Beams
Switch to low beams within 300 feet of the car ahead. High beams in a mirror impair the driver in front.
500
Feet — switch to low beams for oncoming cars
Oncoming Traffic
Dim high beams within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle to avoid blinding them.
$1000
Fine for passing school bus, not yielding to emergency vehicle
Fines
$1,000 fine for: dumping an animal roadside, passing a school bus with flashing red lights, failing to pull over for an emergency vehicle.

No. There is only one written test. Once your child passes it, no further written tests are required to get their license.
California requires 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor. A Certificate of Completion must be presented to the DMV to schedule the road test.
Yes. We recommend a combination of parent practice and instructor lessons. For parents with limited time, we suggest 20 hours of instruction. However, the DMV requires 50 hours with a parent — the more practice, the safer the driver.
Typically 5–15 minutes. For comparison, our founder's test in West Germany in 1991 lasted 5–6 hours. We believe passing the CA road test is a starting point, not a destination — real safety comes from consistent practice.
Teens who are 15½ years old can begin behind-the-wheel lessons once they have a Learner's Permit. The permit requires completing an approved driver's ed course and passing the DMV written test.
You're not alone. Start in an empty parking lot, go slowly, and focus on car controls before ever moving. If it's still too stressful, we can cover more hours. Our instructors are trained to be patient and calm in all situations.
The Hills Driving School brand — Teen Driving LA

Important: A Learner's Permit is only valid after it has been signed by a licensed driving instructor during the first behind-the-wheel lesson with a DMV-licensed driving school.
